One of the most important things before deciding to have a marquee is to find the right venue to site the marquee. Now this may sound obvious but you would be surprised how many people get this wrong.
One of the first things you need to make sure of is that you have enough space for the size of marquee you wish to hire. Use a tape measure to measure the ground not walking paces. The latter tends to lead you to what you’d like to fit in not what actually will fit in. As well as the marquee itself you will need to allow space to work on and around the marquee. Things like roof covers need space in order for them to be pulled across the rafters.
Ground level is also very important on marquees. As you can imagine, the flatter the ground the better, though marquees can be erected on gentle slopes. If the slope is too severe then you may have to build a platform to create a level surface to build the marquee on. This will greatly add to the cost. Also bear in mind that placing a marquee at the bottom of a slope could be liable to boggy conditions if there has been sufficient rain.
Another thing to consider is the type of ground. The most common ground is grass and ideally a surface like a football pitch ie. not many lumps and bumps. This sort of ground makes it easier and safer to lay mats for flooring rather than a more expensive wooden floor. It may be that you have no option than to lay a wood floor. For instance, in winter to avoid water seeping in from the seasonal rains a slightly raised floor will be needed to allow the water to flow underneath and the feet to stay dry. Marquees can also be erected on surfaces such as concrete or tarmac. If you are unable to peg in to the ground then you made to use weights.
